Fix your house, get free money from the IRS--real simple. I'm doing it too.
I am currently getting geared up for that dreaded meeting I have every year with my accountant.[:'(] Don't get me wrong--he is a great guy, but not on the top on my list of favorite things to do. I'm sure you may agree. Anyways, his name is John Gurrin.
Anyways the cool thing I found out is that for tax years 2006 and also 2007 you can receive a tax credit putting new windows in your house. The tax credit is limited to the lesser of 10% of the costs of the windows and installation, up to $200. In my case I went back and was bumbed out that I had some windows installed in November of 2005. If only I waited one more month. The good thing is that I hired Lowes for the vinyl windows that were on the back and sides of my home. (A little cheaper) Then I noticed that I had Tailor Made Windows of Eastpoint, MI (ask for Steve) install the front windows on the upper level and .....................I WROTE THEM THE CHECK ON January 5th, 2006. Since I paid $2,250, I get full advantage of the $200 credit. I still qualify for more $$ if I want to do insulation, doors, etc. in 2007.
Here are some helpful links that may help you. Let me know what you think and if you have any questions. Always investigate for yourself and check with a tax professional since I am not a tax professional. However, I do like free money. Please comment if you have any other usefull info to say here.
